I am currently taking orders and deposits for these hives. You can support local beekeeping, diversified genetic stock and survivor queens by purchasing your nucleus from me and my collaborators.
Nucs, or nucleus colonies, are small honey bee colonies created from larger colonies. The term refers both to the smaller size box and the colony of honeybees within it. The name is derived from the fact that a nuc hive is centered on a queen, the nucleus of the honey bee colony.
A Nucleus hive will be made of of 5 frames total, 2 frames of brood, a frame of food (honey and pollen) and a frame of draw wax. There will be a newly mated queen and 3+ frames of bees.
Nucleus hives are $200.
I ask all customers to pay for nucleus hives when you order. I do this because it costs money to create nucs. Paying now helps me to absorb those costs while I’m raising new queens.
When customers pay up front, I know how many hives I can produce and sell successfully, which impacts how much I can plan for.
All nucleus hive pick ups will occur in May-June 2019 at the apiary site at Yard Birds Farm. A map can be found here (click for map).
